Decorative Paint Types
Metallic paint- This paint comes in a good range of colours and has small reflective metal particles in it to creative the effect. It is best painted in a crisscross pattern or dragged in different directions to bring out the effect.
Pearl effect – Pearl effect paint has pearl particles and brings a soft shine to the paint. Beautiful for a feature wall in a lounge room.
Suede – Suede effect paint is a high build paint that has a rougher and thicker texture to give the effect of soft suede leather. This paint comes in a range of colours and is great for feature walls.
Decorative Paint techniques
All of the decorative paints can be rolled on however to bring out the best of the features it must brushed on in different directions. Some manufactures have advised that the decorative paint can be rolled on for the first coat and then bushed on for the second coat to bring out the features. This does speed up the job however in my option, and having done many walls with decorative paint, it is best to brush on both coats to bring out the full texture and particles of the paint finish.
- Brush Technique: Cut in with the brush around the four side of the wall and then brush in the wall completely using a crisscross pattern – repeat twice.
- Broom Technique: Cut in the with a brush to start and then, using a roller, paint the complete wall. Then use a soft clean broom and drag it down from ceiling to floor and then floor and ceiling . Repeat this pattern across the whole wall. Also you can use the broom just like a giant brush in a crisscross pattern or your own random pattern to create the effect.
- Sponge technique: First paint out with a brush and roller and then sponge with a clean sea sponge to effect a random textured effect.
- Bag technique: Paint out with a brush and roller and then roll a ‘bunched up’ plastic bag over the surface to create the effect. Another way is to wrap a plastic bag or cling film over the roller and roller the wall to create the effect.
Decorative Tips
- Try a few techniques out on the wall you are going to paint or on a large piece of white cardboard about 1m x 1m and tape it to the wall to get an idea of the look.
- Always work with a wet edge. This means if you have a large wall, paint it in about 2 square metres at a time so the edges of the paint do not dry out before completing the wall.
- You can roll on the paint in sections and then change the texture with a brush or broom for a quicker job.
- Try out different brush sizes for different effects.
