Timber decks look great when their design and construction come together making the deck standard out as a real feature. One option when building a new deck is to have a nail free or no nail solution for the decking boards. Most decks have their decking boards nailed or screwed down to the joists. However a nail free decking board system means you will have a seem less look with in turn gives a professional ans stylish feel.
Types of nail free or no nail decking boards
- Clip down – First you screw a bracket down to the joist and the decking board has a milled profile in the side of it which clips into the bracket – just push down.
- Invisible fasteners – Similar to the clip down however the screw down clip fits into the side of the decking board and then is screwed down.
Pros of nail free decking boards
- They look great, giving a beautiful finish to the deck .
- There is no splitting of the timber from a nail or screw.
- Water will not sit in the nail or screw holes.
Cons of nail free decking boards
- The nail free systems cost more than nailed or screwed decks.
- You must get the decking boards from the suppliers and if you run out you can’t just go to your local hardware to get more.
- The nail free decking solutions take longer to construct.
Nail free decking boards are still an excellent solution for a professional look and can be done by a DIY person just the same as building a normal deck. If you choose this option be prepared for the extra cost and the need to order a bit more decking then you need for cutting etc. No nail decking boards come in hardwoods and composite (plastic timber blend) , softwoods are not as available because they lack strength.
