House Paint – The Good, Bad and the ugly

by Author Steve Robinson on August 3, 2010

Did you known that house paint comes in threes? Premium, trade line, and project line.

Three levels of house paint

  • Premium – Full quality, better coverage, fully washable, repel stains, repels mold, and 10 years plus life.
  • Trade line – A reasonable paint, good coverage, washable but all stains do not come off, up to 10 years life, does tend to mark.
  • Project line – Not a good paint does not cover well, marks and stains easy, chalky, used in cheap project homes to make the builder more money, 5 years life (maybe), cheapest in price, not recommended.

Some people think they are saving money by using cheap paint, however the paint does not last very long or it is not washable. The best way is to pay the extra $10 -15 per litre and do the job right.

Premium paint is still the best paint to use when renovating for profit. Why? Because it’s washable, easier to paint because it flows and covers better, and the richer colours look the best.
Trade line paint is OK paint so if you are unable to afford the premium paint however I would not recommend project line paint.

Buying your paint

  • Premium paint – all hardware stores and paint outlets and all major brands of paint have this.
  • Trade line – All hardware stores, paint outlets and department stores have this.
  • Project line – available in department stores and trade paint centres - sold as  budget paint.

Most brands have all three levels of paint and they are aimed at different price points to reach different customers. So be aware just because it is a major brand that you trust does not mean that it is good – so make sure you check the label and check the range of paint available.

Do you seek out quality paint or the cheapest paint? why not leave a commet?

What type of paint do you buy or want to buy?

I personally prefer buying Premium paints. It is more expensive than the other types but the quality is better than the others and i think it give better result when I use it.
